Cross Laminated Timber – CLT

From the tallest all-wood Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) building in North America to the first post-tensioned CLT core walls, StructureCraft works with architects, builders, and developers to create beautiful (and sensible) CLT timber structures.

Cross laminated timber (CLT) panels are formed by stacking and gluing together successive perpendicular layers of wood. The layered stacks are then pressed in large hydraulic or vacuum presses to form an interlocked panel. The panel is then sized and shaped with a Computer Numerically Control (CNC) machine into a fully construction-ready component. The number of layers in a panel can range from three to seven or more, and panels can have door and window openings, plus routings for electrical and mechanical systems, before shipment to the building site.

By the nature of its design, CLT has inherent load-bearing strength and can serve as material for both vertical and horizontal assembly applications. Since wall, floor and roof sections made of CLT are formed off-site in a factory, it allows for a much shorter on-site construction time. CLT can be used as a structural system in Tall Wood buildings (such as the new Framework 12-story timber building or the UBC District Energy Centre) and can be used as an alternative to concrete or steel.

Our CLT Procurement Process, and Design-Assist

We deliver cross laminated timber projects of any size across the USA and Canada, and procure glued CLT from both local North American and European producers. CLT can be certified to APA PRG-320 if required. We are your complete delivery partner for CLT structures, and can provide design assist, 3D modelling, structural engineering, fabrication, and installation services as required. We often provide value engineering services to drive cost down, and our structural engineers are licensed in many states and provinces.

Cross Laminated Timber Fabrication

Often all machining and milling of holes is performed at the CLT producers plant based on our detailed fabrication drawings and CNC machine files, and the product is shipped straight to site. Other times the product is shipped to our 30,000sqft fabrication shop for further fitting of steel connections to speed up site erection.

As well as glued CLT, we have developed a special mechanically-fastened CLT using carefully engineered fastening patterns rather than adhesives and pressure. Mechanically fastened CLT is not limited by press size and so is available in any size. We can also produce curved CLT panels with a single radius.

3D Modelling

We 3D model each project, and BIM is central to our entire workflow. Our models translate directly to machine CNC files. Our skilled Design team uses a combination of Cadwork, Rhino+Grasshopper for complex structures, and Autodesk Inventor to parametrically model each project.
