Upcoming Events - Week of February 22, 2021
Three events are coming this week, with Lucas Epp and Drew Wilms of StructureCraft speaking.
Three Impressive Timber Gridshell Dome Structures in China
On Tuesday, February 23, Lucas Epp will be presenting at the Virtual Wood Design Seminar, sponsored by WoodWorks. He will address the topic “Taiyuan Domes Botanical Garden: Three Impressive Timber Gridshell Dome Structures in China”.
Joining Lucas during this session area two other leading wood innovators: Dr. Nancy Mackin with Mackin Tanaka Architecture, and Nathan Benbow with VISTEK. They will be presenting on “Tsawwassen First Nation Youth Centre: Mass Timber and Poles Recall Coast Salish History” and “The World’s Tallest Mass Timber Vertical Extension” respectively

Details Make the Design Work
Join Lucas Epp, our Head of Engineering, and Michael Britt with Lake|Flato Architects for a virtual WoodWorks USA event. The workshop will address the topic “Details Make the Design Work: Coordinating Structural and Architectural Requirements in Light-Frame and Hybrid Wood Buildings”. The discussion will involve a detailed case study of the recently completed Hotel Magdalena in Austin, TX.

Wood and Everything After
February 25 Event
On Thursday, February 25, our BD Engineer Drew Wilms will be a panelist at the Wood and Everything After virtual event, hosted by the University of Miami School of Architecture. Drew will be addressing the topic “Design Considerations for Efficient Mass Timber Manufacturing & Construction”.
What key elements should be considered early in the design development process of a mass timber project that drive efficiency in manufacturing, logistics planning, and construction? This question will be explored through the presentation of real built project examples across North America.

February 26 Event
On Friday, February 26, our Head of Engineering Lucas Epp will be presenting at the Wood and Everything After event as well! Lucas will be addressing the topic “New Boundaries in Timber Engineering”.
As timber vaults to its position as the de rigueur material of the 21st century, the bounds of this ancient construction material are being discovered anew. Larger buildings and longer spans are being demanded from architects flocking towards timber as an answer to construction’s carbon sequestration dilemma. From the US to China, a series of examples of mass timber and freeform timber structures will be used to showcase timber’s ability to create complex modern architecture, using computational engineering and DfMA techniques.
