53’ CLT Shear Walls Create a First for Office Design
One Bridgeland Green in Cypress, Texas, is a 54,000 sf. boutique timber framed office building, part of the Bridgeland mixed-use development by Howard Hughes. Designed by Lake | Flato and Kirksey Architecture in a modern agrarian architectural style, the project is defined by its gabled roof topped with a linear cupola and features large timber framed balconies at each floor level.
Our design challenge was to create an efficient structure that met the owner’s and our client’s vision for a sustainable, state-of-the-art office space that showcases the mass timber structure. The project utilizes cross-laminated timber (CLT) shear walls for the lateral system, which are designed to resist the significant wind loads common in the Gulf Coast region. The shear walls form the building’s central core and are prominently displayed in the elevator lobby and tenant spaces. The remainder of the superstructure is comprised of a glulam frame supporting dowel-laminated timber (DLT) decking.
The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold and Fitwell certification and its users will benefit from the biophilic nature of mass timber construction. It is a first-of-its kind office building in the Houston area, setting the standard for a more sustainable future.
As the structural engineer of record for the project, StructureCraft is honored to be part of the Design Team bringing this unique building to life. And as the turnkey fabricator and installer of the timber superstructure, we are excited to make it a reality.
