Northside Community Recreation Centre
Cultural and Social Hub for Lund
This new recreation centre, located near the Sunshine Coast Highway in Lund, serves as both a recreational hub and a cultural landmark for the region and emphasizes exposed timber construction. The Design-Build project is funded jointly by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
The building features a welcoming lobby that transitions into a multipurpose gymnasium with a performance stage, supported by a commercial kitchen. Central to the interior aesthetic are five carved wooden pillars by local artisans, a community-built light clay wall transitioning from exterior to interior, and a stained glass feature that enriches the indoor environment with natural hues.
Glulam roof beams support an exposed dowel-laminated timber (DLT) ceiling, landing on LWF bearing and shear walls. Foundations consist of conventional strip and pad footings supporting a structural slab-on-grade. The exterior covered area uses hybrid timber/steel framing, with suspended DLT panels forming an exposed soffit.
StructureCraft is honoured to be a part of the Design-Build team, in collaboration with site lines architecture and Dawn Construction.
